From our Bishop

Beloved in Christ,

The mighty events of Holy Week draw near. Throughout the parish churches of the United Dioceses, services, indeed special services to mark this ŒWeek of weeks¹ will be held, led by our faithful clergy and Readers. More; they shall seek not merely to commemorate the central events surrounding the passion, death and resurrection of our blessed Lord; a look back as it were. They shall serve us best by encouraging us to meditate upon the Œdeep, deep love of Jesus¹ for each of us; indeed for the world. How Œhe hung and suffered there¹ for us and for our salvation; our healing and our peace is its major theme. A look inwards is demanded of us. In short, we are intimately involved in the awesome events we can only call Œholy¹ because of what followed the death and burial of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The joy of Easter is a joy without end; a joy that the world cannot ever take away. Jesus, literally dead and buried, was raised by the Father in the power of the Spirit to bring in the Œnew creation¹, in which our new life and renewal is his special gift to you and to me. It is so easy to take all of this for granted; second-hand if you like. But can such Œamazing love¹ be treated to mere observance and dutiful respect? Creation transfigured in all its Easter glory cries Œno!¹. Let us enter into the story of the crucifixion of our Saviour, events before which the Œangels veil their faces¹ with reverence and sorrow for our sins. But let us also arise on Easter morn to join our praises with those of the same Œangels, archangels and all the company of heaven¹ to proclaim :

ŒChrist has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again¹.

Grace to you and peace,

Bishop Peter :
