From the Diocesan Children’s Office
The Revd Isobel Jackson
Hello from Waterford!
LOOKING AT WORSHIP- WORSHIP FOR ALL THE FAMILY
The Content of worship-
Worship tends to have two main parts: the Word and the Sacraments. The Anglican tradition tends to emphasize the proclamation of the Word. This includes readings from the Bible, and a sermon, which will normally help the congregation understand the reading and apply it to them. Historically, the sermon was a major way of conducting adult Christian education and of encouraging individuals and congregations to make necessary changes. Protestant worshippers had a surprising desire for the Word and three-hour sermons were not uncommon- this desire does not seem to have made it into the 21st Century!- except maybe in countries like Africa!
BRAINARAMA:
The fun TABLE QUIZ has finally taken place! Ten very enthusiastic teams came along on the day and showed they knew their stuff! Although nervous at first the teams soon relaxed and did their best, even if they were not so sure of the answers. Hercules was not the one in the Bible who killed a lion with his bare hands, but it’s always worth a try if you don’t know!
I was very impressed at the overall knowledge of the children and the final results were very close, out of sixty questions there were only a few points between the teams. The winning teams were:
1st Castlecomer team with: Hannah- Beth Ward, Aisling Byrne, Michele Ward and Christopher Parkinson.
2nd Kiltegan team with: Elizabeth Driver, Charlotte Richards and Andrew Fairbrother
3rd Castlecomer team with: Richard Broom, William Trousdell, William Ward and Jonathon Ward.
The Bishop presented the winning team with a perpetual cup and medals to the children of the first three teams.

Congratulations to all who took part, and thanks to all the committed Sunday school teachers and parents who encouraged and brought their children along, also to those who helped on the day.
Special thanks to Kilkenny College for the use of their facilities and to the bursar Peter Dukelow for his organisation on the ground!
Teacher Training:
There is Sunday school teacher training going on at parish level across the diocese, let me know if your parish would like specific training.
Resources:
There are many resources available for Sunday School and children’s ministry. Please continue to contact me on these.

GIRLS’ FRIENDLY SOCIETY
There isn’t a huge amount to report this month as both Central and Diocesan Council Meetings don’t happen this year until the end of November. However, Tinahely GFS had a very well attended Enrolment Service on Sunday 22nd October in Kilcommon Church and a number of new girls were enrolled.
The Leaders and girls from Tinahely would like to say a big thank you to Linda Massey who treated them to a Christmas cake icing demonstration at a recent meeting. I also understand from branch leader, Una Naylor, that the Leaders found the samples of cake most scrumptious!!
By the time you will read this Christmas will be very much on all our minds and no doubt the Leaders and girls from Tinahely branch will have the best iced Christmas cakes in the United Dioceses. I am sure many of the branches are getting ready for their Christmas Parties I would like to wish you all a Very Happy and Blessed Christmas. I will leave you with this Letter which is in the current issue of GFS Newsletter. It was titled “Letter from Jesus”.
My dearest Friend,
How are you, I just had to send this letter to tell you how much I love and care for you. I saw you yesterday as you were walking with your friends and talking with your loved ones. I waited all day, hoping you would talk to me also. As evening drew near, I gave you a sunset to close your day, and a cool breeze to rest you and I waited, you never came! Oh yes, it hurt Me, but I still love you because I am your friend. I saw you fall asleep last night, and I longer to touch your brow, so I spilled moonlight upon your pillow and face. Again I waited, wanting to rush down so we could talk. I have so many gifts for you.
You awakened late and rushed off for the day forgetting all about me. My tears were in the rain. Today you looked so sad, so alone it makes My heart ache because I understand. My friends let Me down and hurt Me many times too, but I love you.
I try to tell you in the quiet green grass. I whispered it in the leaves and trees, breathe it in the colours of the flowers. I shout it to you in the mountain streams, and give the birds love songs to sing. I clothe you with warm sunshine and perfume the air. My love for you is deeper than oceans and bigger than the biggest want or need you have.
We will spend eternity together in heaven. I know how hard it is on earth. I really know (because I was there) and I want to help you. My Father wants to help too. I am the Way you know. Just call Me, ask Me, talk to Me. It is your decision. I have chosen you, and because of this I will wait… because I love you.
Yours friend, JESUS
