CONFIRMATION
St Canice’s Cathedral, Kilkenny in association with Kilkenny College.

A packed Cathedral attended the confirmation of 36 young people from Kilkenny College and one candidate from the local parish. The congregation included parents, godparents. Friends sponsors and many clergy from the United Dioceses and beyond.
The music was provided by the Choirs of Kilkenny College conducted by Mr David Milne and Ms Nichola O’Mahoney.
The readings were by Ms Siobhan Murphy (pupil), Mr Trevor Garrett a teacher from the College and the Gospel was read by the very Revd Norman Lynas Dean of Ossory.
In order that the candidates reflect on their Baptism and the start of their Christian journey, the Bishop led them to the font and showed them the pouring of water and the touch of the palm leaf as symbols. They were then led back up to the sanctuary to the hymn “The Lord of the Dance”.
In his sermon Bishop Burrows said that it was unlikely that they would remember the sermon nor did he mind as it was more important to recall the more tangible and intense elements of the ceremony: the water of baptism, the feel of the laying on of hands, the taste of the bread and the wine at their first communion. He suggested that the parents of the candidates would no doubt remember their first kiss and encouraged the young people that they would remember the feelings of their Confirmation Day 30 years on and that they would continue to feel God’s Love.
Following there was the ceremony of confirmation with each candidate’s name being read out and in conclusion the congregation applauded the newly confirmed standing facing their families.
The service concluded with a celebration of the Eucharist for all after which the Bishop led his young flock down the aisle, through the West Door out into their new world where they were greeted by their families.
