From our Bishop
Beloved in Christ,
I hope that you, with your families, have celebrated a joyful Easter, although
I know that some homes were visited with sadness and indeed tragedy. May our
risen Saviour draw close to you in such need.
As we greet the ‘swallows ands swifts' overhead and under our eaves, the month
of May encourages me to greet three other arrivals in the United Dioceses: a
book; clergy and an Officer. First, already there has been a sighting or two
of The Book of Common Prayer 2004, our Church's new prayer book, about which
I will write more next month. We greet its arrival with anticipation and enthusiasm.
Secondly, the Rev'd William Ritchie has arrived as incumbent of the Tullow Group
of parishes. We welcome him warmly and wish him well as he settles into his new
responsibilities. We also send congratulations and greetings to the Rev'd Maria
Jansson who prepares to rise if not to move, to the challenge of her nomination
to the incumbency of the Wexford Group with Kilscoran. Maria's institution will
be held on Friday May 7th at 8.oop.m.
Thirdly, all Mothers' Union roads and banners will lead to Christ Church Cathedral,
Waterford on Ascension Day, May 20th at 7.30 p.m for its annual Festival Service
and commissioning of our new Diocesan President, Mrs Hazel Sherlock. We thank
our outgoing President, Mrs Joan Dier, for her example and leadership in the
past and wish Hazel well for her term of office. The Mothers' Union is, in my
opinion, one of the most important diocesan organisations (not forgetting its
role in the Church and Anglican Communion at large) and I look forward to supporting
Hazel and her committee, alongside our many branches, as together we face many
challenges pertaining to membership, relevance and witness in the future. Already,
plans are at an advanced stage for its Family day in Kilkenny College on Saturday
September 25th. Hazel's commissioning will be held in the context of the Ascension
eucharist, during which our new Book of Common Prayer 2004 will be officially
welcomed ‘in procession' into the liturgical life of the See. Hazel, our prayer
is with you and Tom at this exciting time in the life of your Rectory.
Grace to you all with peace in our risen Lord Jesus,
Bishop Peter
