THE WARMTH OF WATERFORD ON Sunday 27th August 2006

Mayo held on by the one point overcoming Dublin for the first time in 100 years as the crowds gathered outside Waterford Cathedral to give support to their new bishop shortly to be installed in their diocese.  With the choir rehearsal over the congregation made their way into the church and not long afterwards the procession of robed clergy, of Mayor and councilors and the Knights of Malta counted down the time for the ceremony of the knocking on the door. At precisely 6.25 the bishop, the Rt. Revd Michael Burrows arrived at the door and witnessed by the Registrar the Very Revd Gordon Wynne, Bishop Burrows drove his crosier at the closed doors so that all could here within.  The doors opened followed by the interchange of request and welcome and the Bishop was led into the church by the Dean the Very Revd Trevor Lester and to the hymn “Ye Servants of God”

The large congregation then witnessed the enthronement of Bishop Burrows into the Diocese of Waterford as the mandate was read by the registrar the Very Revd Gordon Wynne and the Bishop was installed in the Episcopal Chair, symbol of the See.

Many local dignitaries were present including the Mayor Cha O’Neill and councillors, Bishop Lee the Roman Catholic bishop of Waterford, Dr. John Parkin the Methodist-Presbyterian minister and Mr. Noel Keane from the Society of Friends. Also present were Mr. Billy Canning from Waterford Crystal, the Knights of Malta, along with many others.

There were also many clergy including the Archdeacon of Cashel and Ossory the Ven. John Murray and the Dean of Cashel the Very Revd Dr. Philip Knowles.   

Dr. Eric Sweeney conducted Joint Choirs of Waterford Cathedral and St. Brigid’s Choir form Kildare Cathedral with Derek Verso who played the organ. The music included Stanford’s Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis and Charles Wood’s anthem “O Thou the Central Orb”.

The Bishop dedicated the three chandeliers recently presented to the Cathedral by Waterford Glass proclaiming that the craftsmanship had produced these gifts of light symbolic of the light of Jesus Christ.  The organ loudly heralded the offertory hymn “God, whose almighty word…” which ends each verse with “let there be light!”

The service ended with the Te Deum and the choir and procession recessed back to the Wes Door forming a Guard Of Honour for the newly installed Bishop

A reception was held afterwards in the Tower Hotel.

LISMORE ENTHRONEMENT

On Wednesday 30th August the Enthronement took place of the Rt. Revd Michael Burrows as the Church of Ireland Bishop of Lismore.

The ceremony began with the ceremonial “knocking at the door” with the Bishop asking to be admitted to the cathedral and being welcomed by the Dean, the Very Revd William Beare. The mandate was then by the Registrar the Very Revd Gordon Wynne and the Dean led the bishop to his Chair for his enthronement. 

The music was led by the cathedral choir with organist Mr. Jim Cosgrove.  Anthems were led by the Choir and the Dean the Very Revd William Beare, his brother Robert and oboist Andrew Healy. Dean Beare sang lines in Irish in recognition of the Gaeltacht area in this Group of Parishes.

A large congregation attended including many clerical and civic dignitaries.  Present were theMayor of Lismore Councillor Helen O’Sullivan; the County Mayor; the Assistant Co. Manager Mr. John O’Flynn.

Among the visiting clergy were Br. Francis Cartlan from Mount Mellory representing Fr. Kevin Mulcahy; Fr. Michael Friars from Tallow; Fr. Michael Waters from Ballylooby; Fr. Kiely from Cloyne; Fr. Edmond O’Culleanain from Dungarvan Co. Waterford; and Fr. Arthure from Cappoquin.

Also present was the Dean of St. Patrick’s Cathedral Dublin the Very Revd Dr. Robert McCarthy; the Archdeacon of Cashel and Ossory the Ven. John Murray; the Dean of Waterford the Very Revd Trevor Lester; the Dean of Cashel the Very Revd Dr. Philip Knowles along with many other clergy from the locality and from the wider dioceses.

Following the service a reception was held in Lismore Castle by kind permission.

FELLOWSHIP IN FERNS

On a bright sun-filled Sunday on 3rd September the Enthronement took place of the Rt. Revd Michael A.J. Burrows as the Church of Ireland Bishop of Ferns right in the heart of pastoral Wexford.

The Bishop, who along with his chaplain the Revd Margaret Sykes, Auxiliary Priest to Ardamine Group of parishes, and the Registrar the very Revd Gordon Wynne dean of Leighlin asked to be admitted to the cathedral and be welcomed by the Dean, the Very Revd Leslie D.A.  Forrest and the Cathedral Chapter. This completed, the procession made their way up the nave to the sanctuary to the hymn “God’s who city’s sure foundation”.
In the Santuary the Registrar presented and read the Mandate from the Archbishop of Dublin.  TheBishop then asked for prayer that he may serve the Diocese and is led to kneel at the altar.  The Precentor the Revd Canon Dermot P.M. Dunne from Crosspatrick and Carnew Group of parishes prayed for the Bishop for his ministry in the Diocese followed by the Chancellor  the Revd Canon Roger J. Harmsworth from Killanne Union of parishes  offering the Book of the Gospels to the Bishop for him to make his allegiance to the Diocese. The Dean led the Bishop to his Chair for his enthronement and installed him there with due acclamation from the assembled congregation. The “Gloria” and the psalm “Lord, who dwell in your tabernacle” were sung.  On keeping with the harvest theme the gradual and final hymn were “God whose farm is all creation’ and “Father blessing every seed-time.  The Offertory hymn was “Alleluia, Alleluia, hearts to heaven and voices raise”.  It was remarked that the Bishop on offering the Peace traversed the entire length of the nave to the rere of the church greeting the congregation.

The music was led by the cathedral choir conducted by Mr. Henry Percival with organist Ms. Sheila Milne.
A large congregation attended including many civic and clerical dignitaries. Present were Cllr. Paul Kehoe T.D.; Dr. Liam Twomey T.D.; Cllr. Declan McPartlin; the Most Revd Dennis Brennan, Bishop of Ferns, the Very Revd William Cosgrove, PP; and the Very Revd Paddy Cushen, PP.
Also present were the Archdeacon of Cashel and Ossory the Ven. John Murray; the Dean of Waterford the Very Revd Trevor Lester; the Dean of Cashel the Very Revd Dr. Philip Knowles along with many other clergy from the locality and from the wider dioceses.
The ceremony concluded with a celebration of the Eucharist and the churchwardens Ms. Nancy Kinch and Mr. David Sykes led the procession back to the Chapter Room.

Following the service a reception was held in St, Mogue’s Cottage.
