Mothers Union Notes

WINTER COUNCIL

This was held on Monday 2nd December in the Media Room at Kilkenny College and we are indeed grateful to the Headmaster, the Revd. Canon Black, for allowing MU the use of these magnificent facilities. We must also thank the students, members of staff and the catering department for all their help and assistance during the day. All helped to make this meeting a very happy and successful event. Proceedings commenced with Holy Communion and again thanks to Dean Lynas, the Revds. A. Wallace and N. Gillespie for this inspiration start to the day. Our Diocesan President, Joan, was back from her travels looking very tanned and relaxed and led the day in a very efficient and determined way!

Branch representatives who attended took back lots of information to their Branches - lots of helpful advice - lots of statistics. Not everything can be mentioned here but below are some of what was discussed:

STATISTICS

The following refer to our own Diocese of Cashel & Ossory as at September 2002

Number of Branches 28
(Taghmon/Horetown/Ballyoughton Branch is now closed)
Total Number of Members 584
(Membership is down 20 from last returns)
Amount sent to Overseas € 6000
Amount sent to Relief Fund € 1700

MU REPRESENTATION ON VARIOUS CHURCH BODIES AT NATIONAL LEVEL

Church of Ireland Bodies Council for Mission and Council for Church Overseas
Marriage Council
Board of Social Responsibility (NI)
Board of Social Responsibility (RofI)

Church Organisations Women's Link (CTBI)

National/Community Groups National Women's Council
Children's Rights Alliance
Women's Forum
Women's Regional Consultative Council

Many MU members also serve on various Diocesan Bodies.

The Revd. Nancy Gillespie from Stradbally, Co. Laois, is the Representative on the National Women's Council. Nancy recently reported that the NWCI has recently been considering (a) valuing women's unpaid caring work and (b) giving women independent social welfare entitlements.
Two campaigns are being facilitated by the Council as follows: Breast Cancer Awareness and the need for free screening for all women and Women's Aid 'Violence against Women' Awareness Campaign.

MARRIAGE WEEK - 9th to 15th February 2003

This is the first time that our Diocese will celebrate this and all Branches are asked to give thought and encouragement to the event. The three Diocesan Services will take place as follows:

" Tramore on Sunday 9th February at 3.30pm - Preacher: The Revd. D. Dunne
from Crosspatrick/Tinahely/Carnew Group of Parishes.
" Bagenalstown on Sunday 16th February at 3.30pm - Preacher: Mrs. Janet Crampton (ex MU Diocesan President, Dublin & Glendalough Diocese)
" Bagenalstown on Sunday 16th February at 3.30pm - Preacher: The Revd. D. Sargent from the Waterford Group of Parishes.

However, Marriage Week is much more (we hope) than those three Services. The following are some ideas for use in your Branch:
" Organise a supper for couples or a coffee morning for those married for 40 or more years
" Hold a music and/or poetry evening on the Theme of Love
" Organise a Celebrate Marriage Meal
" Hold a Valentine's Day Party
" Have a display in a prominent place (church or community hall) on Marriage Then and Now……
" Have a guest speaker to speak on Marriage at its Best
" Hold a Prayer Day for Marriage
" Honour those members of your extended family who marriages have had an impact on your life.
" Ask the Local Media to promote Marriage Week

Again there is a Website for further information - www.futureway.org.uk

All Branches will receive more details etc. on the Services, fliers, posters etc. very soon after Christmas for publicity purposes.

Link News

Dean Barrett enjoyed his trip to Helsingborg during the last few weeks. He was given the usual warm Swedish welcome. He also visited Lund and was most impressed by the full equipped and beautifully appointed Diocesan Office.
Marie Korner has been keeping me up-to-date with the plight of those affected by the troubles in Israeli. She asks that we all pray for them and peace in the Middle East during the Christmas period.
2003 will be a busy year in Lund diocese. They will have special celebration in April and in August, it is hoped that representatives of their link dioceses and overseas projects will meet in Lund. At some point, probably to coincide with some of these events, members of our Link committee will travel to Lund for a planning and re-assessment meeting. Our Swedish friends would like us to go in warmer weather.
We hope that we will have, at least, one Swedish choir singing in wither a cathedral or church in the diocese during the coming year.
The ordinands exchange will take place on Link Sunday, the 1st Sunday of June, in 2003. An alternative option whereby clergy of either diocese could take part if either diocese didn't have ordinands has been proposed. The purpose of these exchanges is that we have as many opportunities to learn about each other as possible and I have no doubt that there are many clergy in this diocese who would be most anxious to avail of such an opportunity.
Continue to pray for our link, for the growing relationship between us and the people of the diocese of Lund and, especially for Bishop Christina. Pray also for the members of our diocesan committee.
A Holy, Peaceful and Joyous Christmas to you all and may 2003 be a time of growing friendship and fellowship between our diocese and that of the diocese of Lund.

LCIYC Notes 2003

Hi there!

Well we do hope that you all had great Christmas (goodluck with the new diet!) :

We at LCIYC had an eventful Christmas.

On 9November, we had a brilliant Harvest Ball. The food was good, the music was excellent and the atmosphere was first-class. Over 300 people had a sit-down meal and over 100 attended the 'afters'. Congratulations to all who won raffle prizes and we hope that fun was had by all. :

On 23November, we, in conjunction with Clonenagh Youth Club, held a Unihoc night. This was well-attended and feed-back was positive. We hope to organise more events such as this in the future. :

Our annual carol service was held on 14December in Ballinakill Church. The music and worship were lively. Many thanks to Dermot and his band, to Rev. Philip and to all who were involved with reading, collecting etc… :

At time of going to press, our Junior Disco in Mountrath has not been held. It does promise to be a great night. Watch this space! :

On 29December, we will hold a day-trip to Dublin. This will entail ice-skating in Smithfield, shopping in Blanchardstown and the cinema. We hope that there will be a lot of interest for this event. Ages 12+ :

Our annual New Years Eve disco will be held in the Gandon Hotel on……..New Years Eve! It will be for the over 18s only. So please come along and have a great time. The music promises to be great and it'll be the perfect opportunity to ring in the New Year 2003. :

Well I'm afraid that's all the news from us here at LCIYC. 9

Hope that you all had a great Christmas and we wish you an equally brilliant New Year.

Don't forget to log onto to our website www.lciyc.cashel.anglican.org and if you have any queries, please contact me, Nicola (087)9664657 or Shirley (086) 8510118.

"i found my way round really easily. i like the historical bits on the churches and pictures. The cathedral's are beautiful"

"i found my way round really easily. i like the historical bits on the churches and pictures. The cathedral's are beautiful"

The above are just some of the comments that visitors have made in the guest book of the newly designed Diocesan Web site, www.cashel.anglican.org.
At the time of writing, (6th December) here have been over 1000 page views in the last ten days. Visitors have been from places as far a field as China, Poland, France Italy, Russia, the US and of course Ireland. You are sure to find much of interest in the site, whether it's the latest diocesan, news, extracts from the Diocesan magazine, information on youth organizations, Vision 2020, the Mothers Union, our Link with Lund, COMAC, youth resources, history and photographs of our church buildings, cathedrals and much more.

If you have any comments or suggestions for the further development of the site please e-mail Rev'd Philip Heak, who maintains and develops it. webmaster@cashel.anglican.org

I hope that all have enjoyed the Christmas Holiday period and are well on the road to keeping those heartfelt New Year resolutions!!

Safeguarding Trust
New Year will see recommencement of training of Youth Leaders in Safeguarding Trust in the Diocese,
Safeguarding Trust is the Church of Ireland Code of Practice for workers with Children and Young people. It is applicable to all parishes and those working with children in any capacity whether in Sunday School, youth group or uniformed organization etc. This course must be completed by everyone working with young people in a Church of Ireland context.
The code is designed to enable all parties within the Church of Ireland to fulfill their proper responsibilities regarding children's and youth ministry. Specifically,
" To prevent the physical, sexual and emotional abuse of children
" to set out the appropriate responses and procedures in the event of abuse taking place
" to encourage safe practice for those who work with children
" to safeguard those who work with children from the consequences of unfounded accusations.

Although to many this programme sounds daunting, it is very practically oriented with a common sense approach that is in no way intimidating or accusatory.
Safeguarding Trust is now in its third edition and a new booklet has been printed for both Youth workers and parish panels. Further details along with a checklist for parishes are available from me and details of training will be sent out to parishes and rectors in due course. Training Dates and times will also be published on the Diocesan Web site www.cashel.anglican.org/safeguard
Confirmation Retreat
The postponed Confirmation retreat will be taking place in early February. This will be for all thinking of being confirmed this Year. The previous Confirmation retreats have certainly been enjoyed by all and this will be no exception. We look forward to having our new Bishop at the event. Incidentally, if anyone is interested in helping as a leader at either the Confirmation retreat or any other event, please contact me. You can read more about Youth Leadership on the Diocesan web site, www.cashel.anglican.org/leadership.
