From our Bishop

Beloved in Christ,

already the challenging but most enjoyable cycle of Confirmation visitations has begun for 2004. It is a privilege to be present in so many of our parishes for this special occasion in the lives of our teenagers and their families and to see many being prepared to 'Stand up for Jesus'. Of course, I know that reasons for so doing can be mixed indeed. Yet the same Holy Spirit who graced their beginnings through the 'water of regeneration' and solemn promises undertaken by others in holy baptism on their behalf has, I believe, led them and us to this point of renewal and recommitment to God and his Church, when such promises are taken on first-hand if you like. Equally, because the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth, he may be encouraging some to reflect further on a feeling that the time may not be quite right to so commit now. Our ever gracious Lord understands the integrity of such a decision and remains an abiding presence in all such expressions of personal honesty in the service of truth. But his welcome still remains and it is for the Church to provide opportunities for its challenge and its embrace.

Confirmation is not restricted to the teenage years. I would like adults who have not been confirmed to know, perhaps for a reason similar to that previously mentioned, that I am holding a Confirmation Service for them in Saint Canice's Cathedral on Easter Eve (April 10th), within the context of its Easter Vigil Service. This is a most symbolic Service which celebrates our blessed Lord's passing from death to life and in the earliest days of the Church was the appointed time for baptising and confirming new adult believers following their Lenten instruction in the Faith. If any reader would like further information about proceeding to this joyful stage in their personal pilgrimage, do please contact your Rector for further details. Already I know of two adults who very much hope to present themselves on this most holy night.

I would very much appreciate your prayer as I continue my Confirmation journeys throughout the See, both for myself and our candidates, junior and senior, that the wonderful Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth, may indeed guide us ever deeper into the knowledge and love of our ever blessed Lord, to whom with the Father and the same Holy Spirit be praise and glory for evermore.

Grace to you and peace,

+Peter
