Baltinglass is the major town for West Wicklow. It is a market town, with the sale of sheep and cattle taking place periodically in the town. Baltinglass has impressive buidings with historical interest, including the Court House and Baltinglass Abbey. The river Slaney ruins through the town. Stratford-on-Slaney was built around a textile printing industry that flourished briefly about two hundred years ago. The present village of two hundred inhabitants occupies the area that once housed 1,000 workers and their families. It is located in the parish of Baltinglass, on the Carlow/Kildare border off the N81 and is the most northerly parish in the Diocese.
The village of Rathvilly lies a short distance from the Wicklow border, in the northern part of County Carlow. Rathvilly has won the Tidy Towns competition in the past.
