Details of Bishop Peter's Consecration

Christ Church Cathedral Filled to Capacity

Christ Church Cathedral was filled to capacity on 25th January for the Consecration of Peter Barrett. People had travelled from all over Ireland and further to attend with representatives from other Anglican Churches, and Lutheran and Old Catholic Churches, from England, Scotland, Wales, Sweden, Spain and Holland.

The Irish bishops were led by the Archbishop of Armagh, the Most Revd Dr Robin Eames, and the Consecration was presided over by the Archbishop of Dublin, the Most Revd Dr John Neill.

The preacher was Revd Dr Kenneth Stevenson, Bishop of Portsmouth, a leading scholar of both Anglican theology and liturgy. He was co-author of a book with the late Archbishop McAdoo, one-time Archbishop of Dublin. His sermon is reproduced here.

Many Bishops attended from outside of Ireland: The Rt Revd Henry Richmond, formerly Bishop of Repton (Church of England); The Rt Revd Bert Wirix, Bishop of Haarlem (Old Catholic); The Rt Revd Christina Odenberg, Bishop of Lund (Church of Sweden); The Rt Revd Jonathan Gledhill, Bishop of Southampton (Church of England); The Rt Revd Idris Jones, Bishop of Glasgow (Scottish Episcopal Church); The Rt Revd Saunders Davies, Bishop of Bangor (Church in Wales) and The Rt Revd Carlos Lopez Lozano, Bishop of Madrid (Spanish Reformed Episcopal Church).

Ecumenical visitors included Cardinal Desmond Connell, Most Revd Eamonn Walsh, of the Diocese of Ferns; Most Revd Laurence Forristal, Bishop of Ossory; Most Revd. William Lee, Bishop of Waterford & Lismore; Revd Winston Graham, President of the Methodist Church and Revd William McLaran, of the Presbyterian Church.

President McAleese was also represented. VIPs included Dublin’s Lord Mayor, Councillor Dermot Lacey, and the Mayors of Waterford and Wexford. The Minister for the Environment & Local Government, Mr Martin Cullen and the Minister for Justice, Mr Michael McDowell. Deputies John Deasy, (Fine Gael) Mary White, (Green Party), and Sinn Fein’s Seán Crowe were also present.

The Ceremony

Every Ordination takes place within the context of the Eucharist. The Bishop-Elect, vested in his rochet is presented for ordination/consecration by two fellow bishops. The certificate of election and of the approval of the house of Bishops are read, the support of the people is sought and the Bishop Elect makes his declaration of Canonical obedience to the Archbishop of Dublin. The Archbishop addresses the congregation, emphasising the Bishop's role not only in and caring for the people of God, but also in working with them in the oversight of the Church. The Bishop elect affirms the questions put by the archbishop, the hymn Veni creator and the litany are sung, and the archbishop prays for the gifts of the Holy Spirit and for the grace necessary for the office of a Bishop in the Church of God. The archbishop, together with the bishops present, lays hands on the head of the bishop elect, who is then vested with the rest of his Episcopal habit. The Communion resumes at the Peace. At the end of the service, as Bishop of Cashel, Waterford, Lismore, Ossory, Ferns and Leighlin, he takes his place immediately before the other Irish Bishop.
