HISTORIC GATHERING OF BISHOPS IN DUBLIN FOR CONSECRATION OF OUR NEW BISHOP |
|
|||
|
One of the most representative groups of ordaining bishops ever to take part in an Irish Episcopal Consecration will arrive in Dublin next Saturday.
The bishops will be attending the Consecration Service of the new Bishop of Cashel and Ossory, the Very Revd Peter Barrett, in Christ Church Cathedral on Saturday, 25 January 2003 at 2.30pm. They will represent other Anglican Churches, and Lutheran and Old Catholic Churches, from England, Scotland, Wales, Sweden, Spain and Holland.
The Irish bishops taking part will be led by the Archbishop of Armagh, the Most Revd Dr Robin Eames, and the Consecration will be presided over by the Archbishop of Dublin, the Most Revd Dr John Neill.
This is probably the first time that the Metropolitan of the Northern Province has been formally present at a Consecration presided over by the Archbishop of Dublin as Metropolitan of the Southern Province.
The two bishops assisting the Archbishop of Dublin will be the Bishop of Cork, the Rt Revd Paul Colton, and the Bishop of Clogher, the Rt Revd Dr Michael Jackson.
The preacher will be the Rt Revd Dr Kenneth Stevenson, Bishop of Portsmouth, a leading scholar of both Anglican theology and liturgy. He was co-author of a book with the late Archbishop McAdoo, one-time Archbishop of Dublin.
The bishops attending from outside Ireland include: The Rt Revd Henry Richmond, formerly Bishop of Repton (Church of England); The Rt Revd Bert Wirix, Bishop of Haarlem (Old Catholic); The Rt Revd Christina Odenberg, Bishop of Lund (Church of Sweden); The Rt Revd Jonathan Gledhill, Bishop of Southampton (Church of England); The Rt Revd Idris Jones, Bishop of Glasgow (Scottish Episcopal Church); The Rt Revd Saunders Davies, Bishop of Bangor (Church in Wales) and The Rt Revd Carlos Lopez Lozano, Bishop of Madrid (Spanish Reformed Episcopal Church).
The Bishop-Elect, Peter Barrett, 46, has been Dean of Waterford since 1998. He played a leading part in the restoration of Waterford Cathedral and represented the Church of Ireland at the International Anglican-Old Catholic Congress in Prague last year.
Peter is Vice-President of Monkstown Hockey Club and a former hockey international and a qualified hockey umpire. He is married to Anne, a social work team leader with the Mental Health Services in the South Eastern Health Board and they have three children, Clare, Alec and Patrick.
