An explanation of the enthronement of a Bishop

The ceremony of installing and enthroning a Bishop enables the people of the Diocese to acclaim and welcome their spiritual Father in God. It is a joyful occasion in which the Bishop will be received by the Dean and Chapter. He will be seated in his Episcopal chair (the "cathedra" from which a cathedral takes its name) and will become, as of right, the principal minister of word and sacrament in his diocese.

A mandate from the Archbishop commands the Dean to install and enthrone the new Bishop. He makes declarations to defend the ancient rights of the cathedral and of his diocese, first asking that the people will pray for him as he assumes his his office.

The climax of the service is reached as the Dean seats the Bishop in the cathedra with prayer for his ministry among us. An anthem is sung and the Bishop is presented to the people. Gifts symbolic of his ministry in the diocese are given to him and he invites the congregation to share the sign of peace.

The ceremony concludes with a liturgy of the Word and with prayer as the Bishop imparts God's blessing on the city and the Diocese.

Afterwards there was a reception in the New Park hotel, Kilkenny to which all were invited
