Youth Leadership is one of the most exciting, exhilarating and sometimes frustrating gifts one can exercise. The question is often asked as to what qualities make the best youth Leaders and usually the answer is composed of various stereotypes: young, trendy, handsome/beautiful, good communicator, funny, musical, always filled with energy, good with kids of all ages and adults too, computer and Internet literate, able to drive buses and vans ........ the list seems endless ......
The role of the Diocesan Youth Officer is to supervise Leader training in the United Dioceses. A number of training Days are held throughout the year and visiting individual parishes to help with parish teams. We are always on the lookout for leaders to help with Youth events such as Day trips, Confirmation week end and Parish activities. For those interested in setting up some sort of Youth Provision within their parishes, the Youoth Officer is there to give advice and help clarify objectives. Leaders must be over 18 and willing to adhere to the principles of "Safeguarding Trust," the Church of Ireland Code of good practice in relation to ministry with children. If you are interested in Youth Leadership or would like any advice regarding youth provision in your parish, please contact the Diocesan Office. Even if you don't feel that you would be happy as a youth leader, there are always lots of not so obvious things that may be of help to the youth leaders in your parish. Somebody is always needed to look after finances, or produce brochures/posters/fliers. Volunteers may be needed to act as Drivers, help with catering, turn the heat on in the parish hall, phone bus companies, help with procuring equipment, keep name & PR lists up to date, contact activity centres for prices, etc. etc. I'm sure there is something that you can do to help. Most of all, you can help by praying for the young people in your parish and their leaders and encouraging them by your support. Grant, dear God, that in this Church the younger may respect the traditions of the older, and the younger may understand the impatience of the younger; so that young and old may share together in your service and gladly recognise that all are one in Jesus our Lord. Amen. |
