Mountrath became a centre for iron, brewing, cotton and tanning after it was founded in the 17th century. The Mountrath Development Association is very active in improving the visual image of the town. Borris-in-Ossory is situated on what was once an 18th century coach road. Before that, in the 7th century, it was a centre for learning and home of Laidcend mac Baith-Bannaig, whose work survives in manuscripts throughout Europe. In the parish there are many organisations and events for adults and young people. An exciting step forward is the appointment of a part time Parish assistant with responsibility for Youth.
