Membership of the Mothers'Union
The Mothers' Union (MU) in Ireland is part of a membership of one million in 70 countries worldwide. History of the Mothers' Union First started in England by Mary Sumner in 1876, the organisation has been celebrating its 125th anniversary during 2001. The Mothers' Union began in Ireland in 1887 with the founding of the first group in Raheny, Dublin by Annabella Hayes. The organisation gradually spread throughout Ireland and in July 1901 Mary Sumner met members during a visit to the country. There are now 400 branches throughout the 12 dioceses of the Church of Ireland which is part of the worldwide Anglican communion. The 11,500 members represent a wide range of age and interests. Membership offers fellowship and prayerful support through regular branch meetings, worship and occasional seminars and conferences. Members in Ireland are linked with members around the world through the Wave of Prayer and from time to time visits are exchanged. Within Ireland members enjoy fellowship through the development of North/South links between dioceses and individual branches. To promote conditions in society favourable to stable family life and the protection of children To help those whose family life has met with adversity.
