mothers union

All this day, O Lord, let me touch as many lives as possible for you: and every life I touch, do you by your Spirit quicken, whether through the word I speak, the prayer I breathe, or the life I live. Amen

(Mary Sumner)

mothers unionIn Cashel Ossory and Ferns we have 28 branches of the Mothers' Union with 604 members, and of those there are approximately 100 members with children under 16. We are very much aware that we are in an ageing society but like many other organizations, we struggle to attract young women to full membership. Family Life has changed since the MU was founded. Although we do not have the full support of younger women, we recognise that they are fully supportive of our aims and objects - the stability of family life. This has been intimated to the Mothers Union on many occasions and it is up to each and every member of the MU to help to shape the organisation for the future.

Membership of the Mothers'Union

Members of the Mothers Union on a trip to Swden in 2002Membership is open to all who have been baptised in the name of the Holy Trinity and who declare their support for the Aim and Objects of the Society.

The Mothers' Union (MU) in Ireland is part of a membership of one million in 70 countries worldwide.

History of the Mothers' Union

First started in England by Mary Sumner in 1876, the organisation has been celebrating its 125th anniversary during 2001. The Mothers' Union began in Ireland in 1887 with the founding of the first group in Raheny, Dublin by Annabella Hayes. The organisation gradually spread throughout Ireland and in July 1901 Mary Sumner met members during a visit to the country.

There are now 400 branches throughout the 12 dioceses of the Church of Ireland which is part of the worldwide Anglican communion. The 11,500 members represent a wide range of age and interests. Membership offers fellowship and prayerful support through regular branch meetings, worship and occasional seminars and conferences.

Members in Ireland are linked with members around the world through the Wave of Prayer and from time to time visits are exchanged. Within Ireland members enjoy fellowship through the development of North/South links between dioceses and individual branches.

Purpose, aim and objectives of the Mothers' Union
The purpose of the Mothers’ Union is to be specially concerned with all that strengthens and preserves marriage and Christian family life.
The aim of the society is the advancement of the Christian religion in the sphere of marriage and family life. In order to carry out this aim, its objectives are:
To uphold Christ’s teaching on the nature of marriage and promote its wider understanding.

To encourage parents to bring up their children in the faith and life of the Church.

To maintain a worldwide fellowship of Christians united in prayer, worship and service.

To promote conditions in society favourable to stable family life and the protection of children

To help those whose family life has met with adversity.
