Statement by Bishop Adrian Wilkinson of Cashel, Ferns and Ossory on the death of Dr Martin Mansergh

The sudden death of former Minister of State, Senator and Government Advisor, Dr Martin Mansergh, has been announced. Responding to this news, the Bishop of Cashel, Ferns and Ossory, the Rt Revd Adrian Wilkinson, said:

“It is with great sadness that I heard of the unexpected death of Dr Martin Mansergh while he was on a trip abroad with other retired parliamentarians. Politicians, journalists and others have rightly paid tribute to his contribution in the political sphere, not least as someone intimately involved in the Peace Process in Northern Ireland.

As a member of the Church of Ireland he took a keen interest in church affairs and was a loyal parishioner of his home parish of Tipperary. Only recently I met him at a special event in Cashel Library to launch a new film celebrating the Bolton Library which was founded by the early 18th-century Archbishop of Cashel, Theophilus Bolton.

I extend my deepest sympathy to his wife Elizabeth, their children and the wider family circle at this time.”
