On the evening of Friday, 6th December 2024, as Storm Darragh approached with wind and rain, the Revd Arthur Barrett was instituted to the incumbency of Killanne and Killegney Union by the Bishop Rt. Revd. Adrian Wilkinson. Despite the challenging weather, a large congregation gathered for the service, including clergy, diocesan readers, parishioners, friends and family and many others from across the Diocese. Remarkably, some attendees travelled from his previous parish of Arklow and even from Sligo, highlighting the high regard in which Revd Barrett is held.
The service commenced with the uplifting processional hymn God Is Here! As We His People, creating a sense of unity and purpose among the congregation. The organists were Ms Judy Pomeroy and Mr Nathan Barrett.
The Scripture readings were read by Canon Trevor Sargent, Rector of Bunclody, and Mrs
Brigid Barrett. Canon Nicola Halford preached the sermon, delivering a thoughtful and
encouraging message. She recounted how Arthur had encouraged her on a path toward
ministry when she was youth worker in Booterstown in Dublin, during his time there as
Rector. Her reflections also focused on the significance of ministry, the strength found in
community, and the opportunities for growth and renewal within Killanne and Killegney
Union.
Following the institution, speeches were made by Mrs Margaret Jacob, secretary of the Select Vestry, Fr Broaders P.P. of Rathnure, Revd. Michael Anderson of Arklow Presbyterian Church, Canon Trevor Sargent and Ms Barbara Ann Murphy, a representative of the local Council. The Bishop thanked those who had sustained ministry and pastoral care in the parish during the vacancy. Revd Barrett responded by thanking everyone for attending on such a stormy night and said how much he was looking forward to ministering in the parish.
After the service, the congregation was invited to the parish hall to enjoy refreshments
prepared by members of the parish. The institution of Revd Arthur Barrett marks the
beginning of an exciting chapter for Killanne and Killegney Union. With his leadership,
experience, and pastoral care, the parish looks forward to a future of faith-filled growth and community engagement.
We extend our prayers and best wishes to Rev. Barrett, his wife Brigid, and the parishioners of Killanne and Killegney Union as they embark on this new journey together.
