CHRISM EUCHARIST IN CASHEL FERNS AND OSSORY

On Maundy Thursday, clergy and readers from across the Diocese of Cashel, Ferns and Ossory came together at the invitation of the Bishop for the Chrism Eucharist, during which they renewed their commitment to ministry and received the oils which were blessed to be used in the pastoral and sacramental aspects of their ministry in the coming year.

The Chrism Eucharist was held in St Canice’s Cathedral Kilkenny. Bishop Wilkinson presided and he invited his predecessor Bishop John Neill to preach. In his sermon, Bishop John drew attention to the solemn significance of the words addressed to the candidates in the ordination service and reminded the clergy of their high calling in ministry despite their human limitations. Reflecting on Mark’s Gospel with its dramatic ending, he reflected on the power of God to equip and sustain people for the task to which they have been called.

Following the celebration of the Eucharist the clergy and readers were invited by Bishop Adrian and Dr Jacqui Wilkinson to enjoy lunch together at the Bishop’s House, before heading back to their own parishes to begin the most solemn three days – known as the Triduum – in the Church’s calendar.
